A dramatic city fortress of Norman times standing guard over
Limerick on the Shannon. With an imaginative exhibition, multimedia
shows, excavations, war machines, 800 years of history unfold
within its battlements. King John's Castle is a visitor attraction
of international standard, in the heart of Limerick's mediaeval
Heritage precinct on King's Island.
Features of the Castle include:
- 13th century King John's Castle restored and interpreted.
- Imaginative models and 3 dimensional displays, interpreting
800 years of Limerick's and Ireland's history.
- Audio-visual show, 'A Wondrous City, Proper and Strong',
on Limerick's complex and turbulent history. The show takes
you from the City's foundation through to the present day
- Excavated pre-Norman houses, fortifications and siege
mines.
- Copies of the war machines used before the advent of gunpowder.
- Battlement walkways along the castle's walls and towers,
which afford wonderful views of Limerick City, the River
Shannon and County Clare
